Broccoli Sausage Penne Alfredo

Another rare treat, a P.S. post. My Princely Spouse/casual cook made dinner the other night and it was amazing. I am usually surprised when he can chop a few things and mix them and they come together in a delicious way. Usually the Food Network site is involved, but this time he wandered over to All Recipes for an alfredo sauce recipe.He started with sausage, a popular brand that has several different kinds we love. This one was chicken gouda apple, a very flavorful sausage. He fired up the grill and grilled the sausages, turning them so they were lightly browned all around.

Next he pulled a bunch of fresh broccoli out of the fridge and cut it into smaller chunks. He put it in a saucepan with a little water and steamed it until it was just fork tender.

In the meantime he got a pot of lightly salted water boiling and cooked penne until it was al dente.

Using the recipe from All Recipes for alfredo sauce, he melted ¼ cup of butter. He stirred in a cup of heavy cream and let it simmer for 5 minutes. He stirred in a crushed clove of garlic and 1 ½ cups of Parmesan, whisking it until it was melted and smooth.

When the sauce was ready, he stirred his drained pasta into it and tossed until it was all coated. He added the broccoli and the sliced sausage, tossed again and it was ready to serve.  He plated it with slices of chewy sourdough bread.

The pasta dish was great, with the combo of broccoli, sausage and alfredo sauce a riot of flavors that worked well together. And most importantly, a tasty dish I didn’t have to cook myself after a long day at the office!

Sausage and Broccoli Penne Alfredo

4 Hillshire Farms Gourmet Creations Chicken Apple with Gouda Cheese Sausages (or sausage of choice)
1# broccoli; about 4 cups of florets
12 ounces penne; cooked according to box directions to al dente
¼ cup butter
1 cup heavy cream
1 clove garlic; crushed
1 ½ cups Parmesan; shredded
¼ cup chopped parsley; optional

Cook pasta in lightly salted water until al dente. Drain and reserve several cups of pasta water

Grill sausages until browned on all sides; set aside.

Steam broccoli florets until fork tender.

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium low heat. Add heavy cream and simmer, stirring, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cheese and stir until melted and smooth.

Add drained pasta to sauce, tossing to coat. Add pasta water if necessary to desired consistency.

Add broccoli and sliced sausages, stirring to evenly distribute.

Serve hot topped with more shredded Parmesan.
