I’ve made and even posted many dump cake recipes.  Cherry Crunch Dump Cake was the first one I tried and we loved it. I made a Pineapple Crunch Dump Cake this year that I liked even more.  When I saw a recipe on Facebook a few days ago that was essentially the same but made in a crockpot in 2 1/2 hours, I was eager to try it.  I used the suggested can of cranberry sauce and can of apple pie filling.  Totally delicious!

We were making lefsa, a family tradition that is made and eaten around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  We were going to be so busy with the lefsa duties we didn’t want to mess with food on top of that.  We opted for take out tacos and take and bake pizzas.  The crockpot dessert would be a great dessert with no fuss.  It is literally assembled in minutes!

I followed the directions and used a can of cranberry sauce and a can of apple pie filling, pouring them into the crockpot and mixing them together.

Pour yellow cake mix over the fruit layer, smoothing to make it even.

I opened the package of yellow cake mix and poured it over the filling, smoothing it down evenly with my fingers.

Slice 1/2 cup (1 stick) of cold butter thinly and spread over the cake mix layer.

I unwrapped a stick of butter and cut it into thin slices.  I spread them over the top of the cake mix layer and was done!  I put the lid on the crockpot, set the heat for high and set a timer for 2 1/2 hours.  So simple!

Of course I peeked at it through the clear lid once in a while to see how it was faring.  It smelled so good I couldn’t ignore it!  After 2 1/2 hours it was bubbling and ready to serve.

We served the dump cake with mounds of vanilla ice cream that immediately started melting and spreading over the cake.  It looked as delicious as it smelled!  And the taste?  Superb!  Sweet crusty cake with warm and slightly tangy fruit melted in our mouths with the ice cream.  It really reminded me of eating pie à la mode that had been heated before serving.  But much, much easier than having to roll pie crust!

I’m eager to try other flavors of this crockpot dump cake.  I have so many cans of blueberry and cherry pie filling in my pantry it’s a shame.  I think I just found a nice and easy way to use those pie fillings!

Crockpot Dump Cake

1 can cranberry sauce
1 can apple pie filling (or two cans of any pie filling of choice)
1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup butter (1 stick); cut into thin slices

Open cans of fruit filling and empty into crockpot.  Stir to mix.

Open cake mix and sprinkle evenly over top of the fruit layer.

Spread butter slices evenly over the top of the cake mix layer.

Place lid on crockpot and turn heat to high.  Set timer for 2 1/2 hours.

Serve hot with ice cream.
