Avocado Green Goddess Dressing

I ran a search and was amazed at how many recipes for avocado salad dressing or vinaigrette contain cilantro.  I avoid cilantro in anything but I wanted a good avocado dressing for our dinner salads.  Good grief, there are so many seasonings you could add to a dressing, why automatically reach for the cilantro?  Not that I have any in my fridge anyway!  I could have ventured out on my own but was playing it safe.

The recipe I settled on was one for a green goddess dressing using avocado.  Pretty simple, and I did have all of the ingredients on hand except for plain yogurt.  I had plain Greek yogurt, close enough.  So I was eager to see how tasty I could make a dressing without using the dreaded cilantro.

I measured all of the ingredients into my food processor and pulsed until it was smooth and creamy.

I had to remove the lid and scrape down the sides many times until I got it all mixed and smooth.

I scraped the dressing out into a small mason jar, put the lid on and refrigerated it until dinner.

I had a tasty marinara sauce with meatballs in the crockpot for dinner.  I’d made a simple side salad with iceberg lettuce, cucumber and cherry tomatoes.

I drizzled the avocado dressing over the salads and topped mine with crushed Fritos.  It’s my salad fetish thing, I like to have the crispy bits of Fritos instead of croutons on my salad.

Yum!  It was a really nice dressing, with plenty of avocado flavor.  The Worcestershire and lemon added a bit of a kick and the basil was a great replacement for all of those people who reached for their cilantro instead.  Score!  A dressing that was fresh and would last for several days, to garnish several more salads.

Avocado Green Goddess Dressing

  • Servings: 4-6

A vibrant avocado dressing without cilantro!

  • 1 avocado; halved and peeled
  • 1 juice of lemon
  • 1 clove garlic; grated
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire
  • 2 tablespoons green onion; minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and pulse until smooth.

Refrigerate for up to one week.
