Creamy Sauerkraut and Sausage Chowder

We love sauerkraut and sausage made in various ways.  It’s perhaps the small part of German in me that makes me seek out new ways to satisfy that craving.  This amazing soup that has sauerkraut, sausage and potatoes in a rich, creamy broth cried out to me.  I needed to make it!  The weather outside was below zero and the snow just kept falling and blowing in drifts all over the place.  It was time for a bowl of soup. When I decided to make Reuben Egg Rolls early last year, the adventure fell a bit flat.  I didn’t use real corned beef, I used a canned version.  It was not so good.  My P.S. (Purchases Strange things/spouse) said he buys it to occasionally make a quick hash for breakfast.  (Remind me to sleep in that morning!). It’s been awhile since I’ve made a cabbage soup and I always meant to tinker with my recipe for Cole Slaw Soup again.  The post is regularly in the top 10 hits on the blog.  I think just the concept of using Cole slaw in soup is a quick one that deserves some variations.  I wanted to use an Italian sausage this time.  Cabbage is a good contrast to sausage so adding pickled cabbage (sauerkraut) as well might make this soup really interesting.
